Flirting with recession

Japan’s economy almost certainly contracted in the third quarter after growth stalled in Q2. What’s more, available data for September show no sign of a turnaround, with business conditions, measures of confidence and auto sales all deteriorating. More forward-looking indicators are mixed, but do not point to a recovery either. The upshot is that Japan may be slipping back into recession.
