New services index will aid policymaking over time
India’s new Index of Services Production has some notable limitations including a short back series and a lack of coverage in key areas such as health, education and defence. But it is another positive step in the overhaul of India’s economic statistics. As the index gets incrementally upgraded, its value for policymakers and investors will grow over time.
