Weak PMIs suggest soft start for industry in 2024

Although the manufacturing PMIs have overstated the weakness of industry for a while, the big picture from December’s surveys was that global industrial activity was barely growing at the end of 2023. The forward-looking indicators point to further weakness in 2024, as well as a further fall in goods inflation.
