Will Italian households save the day?

Italian households have been the main net purchasers of Italian government bonds recently and we suspect that they will buy a lot more in the coming months. However, the sustainability of Italy’s debt will ultimately depend not on the behaviour of any one investor group but on Italy’s overall public sector debt dynamics, which we think point to debt-to-GDP ratio continuing to rise over the coming years.
