Although July GDP surprised to the upside, the flash estimate that output was unchanged in August will temper any optimism about the economy quickly gaining momentum. While a repeat of the sharp second-quarter GDP contraction is unlikely, avoiding the economy falling into technical recession, third-quarter GDP growth is on track to undershoot the Bank of Canada’s 1% estimate.
