India isn’t ready to become a global rare earths player

India has the world’s third-largest proven reserves of rare earths, but it accounts for a tiny share of global production due to various technical and regulatory difficulties. If these hurdles are eventually overcome, India could present itself as a viable alternative to China as a supplier of rare earths to the global market. But the focus of policymakers for now is limited to increasing self-sufficiency.
