Given the widespread public anger toward the impeached former president Yoon Suk Yeol of the People’s Power Party (PPP), following his botched attempt at declaring martial law, Lee Jae-myung of the Democratic Party (DP) appears poised to become Korea’s next president. His immediate priorities will likely include passing a fiscal stimulus package and negotiating a new trade deal with the United States. With the DP holding a parliamentary majority, enacting the stimulus should be relatively straightforward. However, securing a new trade agreement with the US may prove more challenging.
