Kuwait’s new Emir faces tough challenges

The passing of Kuwaiti’s Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah has raised some concerns over political stability in the country, and, while the transition will probably prove to be smooth, the new Emir will accede to the throne facing several tough challenges, including the coronavirus crisis, low oil prices, and delicate foreign politics. Further ahead, we doubt that the change in leadership will herald a shift towards the economic reforms that are needed to improve Kuwait’s long-run prospects.
