Regulators will be pleased with the increase in the number of takeover bids in the European banking sector over the past couple of years as they would like the EU to have fewer but larger and more competitive banks. However, interventions by several national governments highlight how fraught the path to European banking union is and suggest the system will remain fragmented for some time yet.
