Multinational food and beverages company

Scenario analysis case study

The client wanted to understand how the outcome of the 2020 US presidential election would affect key commodity prices, demand for their products and the overall business environment facing the company during the winner’s first term.

Client profile

The client is a multinational food and beverages company that produces and sells some of the world's leading brands.

Project scope

The client wanted to understand how the outcome of the 2020 US presidential election would affect key commodity prices, demand for their products and the overall business environment facing the company during the winner’s first term.

Our research

We analysed the positions of the two candidates in detail, drawing comparisons and contrasts on monetary, fiscal, trade and climate change policies for both the short and long run. We considered the impacts on inflation, employment, economic growth and the currencies of key trading partners. Building on the expertise of the Capital Economics Commodities Team, we utilised scenario analysis to project the prices of crude oil, aluminium, corn, soybeans and soybean oil.

Client deliverables

We provided quarterly forecasts for two years and annual forecasts through to 2024. We delivered assessment to the client in a graphics rich PowerPoint presentation. We presented the findings to the client in a virtual meeting and were available to answer the questions that they had.

Client results

The client has engaged us for many years to provide them with a thorough understanding of the business environment that they face. This particular project highlighted the opportunities and challenges, in terms of both policy and commodity prices under either a second Trump administration or a first-term Biden presidency.
