Pending home sales tumble again

The recovery in housing market activity has taken a knock. Existing home sales edged up in December, but the pending home sales index recorded a worrying slump. New home sales fell substantially in December, and while mortgage applications for home purchase rose slightly in  January, this failed to fully reverse the drop in the previous month. While we expect housing market activity to recover this year, recent falls highlight the downside risks.
