“What we’ve seen in Russia during previous crises, like in February 2020 and in November and December 2014, is household spending tends to rise quite sharply, because households try to beat the big drop in the currency,” says Liam Peach, an economist covering emerging markets at Capital Economics in London. That appears to be happening again now, he says.
