Drop-In: Could the ECB deliver a hawkish surprise?

24 May, 2022

The increasingly hawkish tone among ECB officials makes a July rate hike look ever more likely. But will the Governing Council go even further than current expectations, delivering either a bumper rate increase in July or bringing its first hike forward to next month’s meeting?

Andrew Kenningham, our Chief Europe Economist, will lead a 20-minute online briefing with economists from our Europe and Markets teams to discuss how economic conditions have shifted in the euro-zone, how this is influencing thinking at the Bank and whether it could go further than expected to tackle inflation. Andrew and the team will answer your questions as they discuss issues, including:

  • Stagflation taking hold – the latest on growth and inflation;
  • How far the ECB is likely to go to rein in price pressures;
  • What all this means for euro-zone bond spreads and the euro.
