These economies have been buffeted by Donald Trump’s trade agenda, even as some emerge as potential winners from the reordering of global supply chains away from China. And they’ve had to contend with capital outflows, weaker commodity prices, and financial market turbulence.
Which of these economies are showing most resilience, and which remain vulnerable as global pressures mount? Ahead of the deadline for the expiry of Trump’s 90-day reciprocal tariffs pause, our economists will explore these shifting dynamics in a special in-person roundtable.

William Jackson
Chief Emerging Markets Economist
William Jackson is Capital Economics’ Chief Emerging Markets Economist. He leads a team of economists covering Emerging Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa. William also works closely with Mark Williams on our Emerging Markets overview service looking at EM-wide themes. Prior to joining Capital Economics, William was a research assistant at the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House) and a contributor to the Oxford Analytica Daily Brief. He holds a degree in Politics, Economics and Philosophy from the University of York and in Latin American Studies from the University of Oxford.

Shilan Shah
Deputy Chief Emerging Markets Economist
Shilan Shah is our Deputy Chief EM Economist, with responsibility for researching and presenting on pan-EM themes as well as leading our India service. He joined Capital Economics in 2012 and was based in our Singapore office for several years before returning to London in 2022. Shilan has a Bachelors degree in Economics from University College London and a Masters degree in Politics from the University of Warwick.

Gareth Leather
Senior Asia Economist
Gareth Leather is a Senior Economist in the Asia team at Capital Economics. Gareth joined Capital Economics in July 2011. Gareth has been covering Asian economies for over 10 years, and prior to joining Capital Economics, he worked for five years at the Economist Intelligence Unit as a Senior Economist. Gareth holds an economics undergraduate degree from Warwick University, and a masters degree in Asian Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies.

China Economist
Leah is an Economist within our China team. She joined Capital Economics on the Graduate Scheme in 2022 and has also worked across the Global, Emerging Markets and Property services. She has an undergraduate degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from the University of Oxford, and is currently working towards her Masters in Economic History at the London School of Economics.
