The latest NAHB survey on builders’ expectations for multifamily production points to a 15% drop in starts over the next year. But with the demand for rental accommodation set to hold up, we don’t think that signals the start of a sustained downward trend in multifamily starts. Moreover, a further shift to single-family housing will ensure total housing starts grind out a gradual rise over the next few years.
