Brexit Watch: Customs paper overly-optimistic

On the face of it, the two further position papers published this week by the Department for Exiting the EU, on Northern Ireland and potential future customs arrangements, point to a fairly soft form of Brexit in regards to trade. However, both the practicalities involved and the EU’s position are likely to lead to compromises which result in some increase in barriers to UK-EU trade after Brexit.
