MAS to loosen soon, Malaysia restarts rail project

The recent deterioration in the economic data from Singapore adds weight to our view that monetary policy will be loosened before the central bank’s next scheduled meeting in mid-October. Meanwhile, earlier this week Malaysia officially restarted work on the China-backed East Coast Rail Link project. Reviving the project will provide a boost to construction, but we are concerned that it will leave Malaysia saddled with bad debts, making its fiscal position even worse.
