Taking stock of Africa’s Covid crisis

The number of coronavirus cases has continued to rise sharply in South Africa, making it more likely that the government will tighten containment measures, which would add to reasons to expect a slow economic recovery. Elsewhere in the region, extremely low levels of testing make it difficult to gauge the full extent of the outbreak. Whether or not lockdowns are re-introduced, those in Sub-Saharan Africa (ex. South Africa) generally caused less economic damage than elsewhere in the emerging world.
