Quick fixes are storing up a large adjustment in Venezuela

Balance of payments strains in Venezuela are showing no signs of easing. While President Chavez’s short-term fixes may ultimately enable him to squeeze through October’s presidential election, the whole economic model is unsustainable. As a result, the economy is likely to enter recession in 2013, and a fully-blown balance of payments crisis seems increasingly likely at some point in the future.
