Are we any closer to a Tobin tax?

The widespread adoption of new Tobin-style levies on financial transactions remains unlikely, despite the latest endorsement from EC President Barroso today. Nonetheless, there is growing international support for a significant increase in the burden of taxation on the financial sector, perhaps focused instead on the size of balance sheets, which could act as a further constraint on the recovery.
