UK beats France in the European income championships

Whatever the football results from Portugal, some countries can at least draw comfort from the latest league table of national incomes. Data from the IMF World Economic Database 2004 allow us to compare the relative sizes of the European economies. Being outside the euro-zone has not prevented the UK from maintaining a higher GDP per head than France and (on most measures) overtaking Germany. Indeed, the UK economy is now larger than the French economy, even though the UK population is slightly smaller.
