Markets become less tolerant of bad policy (Q2 2006)

The recent sell-off across global equity markets naturally extended into the emerging European markets, but the impact has varied widely. Countries with strong fiscal positions and stable governments fared relatively well, even when they had large current account deficits, but nervous investors punished fiscal indiscipline and political instability.
